I chose the Siberian Tiger because tigers are my beloved animals. With actual research I have discovered it is an actual creature and is really in danger of extinction. The most immediate threat to the survival of Amur tigers is poaching to supply demand for tiger parts on the black market. Tigers are most commonly poached for their fur and for their body parts used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is estimated that in 1991 alone, one-third of the Siberian tiger population was killed to meet the demand for their bones and other parts used in this practice. This even though the practice is now unlawful in China. The other vital concern for the survival of the Siberian tiger in the wild is habitat loss. The forests of the Russian Far East ,known as the “Ussuri Taiga” are being pushed to the brink of destruction due to pervasive, large-scale illegal logging, largely to supply Chinese furniture and flooring manufacturers, many of whom in turn export to the U.S. and Europe. This widespread timber theft is driving the endangered Amur tiger ,which calls these forests home…closer to extinction.
