Welcome to Music Around the World – Cake Notes 2017! Today, October 1st the world celebrates International Day of Music! This is the second edition of Music Around the World – Cake Notes, a cake collaboration created by Elisabete Caseiro​ from Betysugarland – Cake Design by Elisabete Caseiro. This year it gathered 37 cake and sugar artists from all over the world to celebrate International Day of Music in the sweetest way. We tried to cover the cultural aspect of music made around the world, representing music genres and instruments from all over the world. My piece representing one of the most unusual polish folk instrument. “Devil’s fiddle” is typical to Kashubian region. A musical tool used to make the so-called ritual uproar. According to the legend, the Kashubian “devil’s fiddle” was the favorite instrument of witches, because its shape resembles a broomstick, on which allegedly witches were flying. Nowadays used as a percussion instrument in folk bands in Kaszuby and a symbol of the region’s musical identity. A violin contour in the shape of an eight cut out of a plank with a tin cube filled with some rattling material attached to it fixed to a wooden rot ,with two wire strings supported by a bridge, two cymbals and two buzzers crown the rod. The strings and the body are stuck with a wooden corrugated club. The instrument is painted with colorful motives , mostly geometrical,embellished with ribbons, topped with a cardboard mask reminiscent of a human head shape, with hair , mustache, beard from fur and a conical cap, club-bow ending in a zoomorphic element (reminiscent of a herring’s head) As an inspiration to decorating cake board I used traditional Kashubian embroidery pattern. Pattern is hand piped with royal icing.
